Chauffered tour of Siena and San Gimignano

One of our most popular excursions, the chauffeured tour of Siena and San Gimignano is something you cannot miss out on during your holiday in Tuscany. Taking this tour, in fact, means going back in time and experiencing the views of Medieval Italy in all the comfort of a modern car with driver.
Dubbed "The Manhattan of Tuscany", San Gimignano counts thirteen towers inside the old walls of the city. A far cry from the original seventy-two that were typical of the town in the Middle Ages, this particular architectural feature still gives an incredible skyline that the tourist coming to San Gimignano can enjoy. The squares, or "piazze", are also noteworthy, surrounded as they are by beautiful examples of Romanesque and Gothic palazzos. It was this fine architecture what has made the centre of San Gimignano become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And for the wine lovers out there, this is the birthplace of the "Vernaccia di San Gimignano", a well-known white wine which is made from a variety of grapes grown on the sandstone hillsides of this area.
Next stop? Siena! This city is world-famous for its historical and artistic heritage as well as for its famous Palio. And this city too has been proclaimed UNESCO World Heritage Site, in 1995.
One of the main attractions in Siena is the Church of Santa Maria della Scala. Beautiful in its own right with its fascinating façade in Gothic style, mosaic floors and a wonderful sculpted pulpit in Carrara marble, the cathedral is also home to many important works of art. Some of those treasured in the church include "The Feast of Herod" by Donatello, as well as works by Bernini and Michelangelo. The next must-stop is "Piazza del Campo", the famous shell-shapes square where the Palio, one of the most famous historical horse races, is held twice a year. A highly-competitive and cut-throat race, it is held both in July and in August. Only one rider from each neighborhood can participate for the glory of the city quarter, and the blood runs high in the weeks preceding the race. The spectacle of the race, however, is well-worth watching.
